Uhtred the Bold

d. 1016 · 11th century

Uhtred the Bold was earl of Bamburgh and, from about 1006, of all Northumbria until his death in 1016. He won fame by defeating a Scottish army besieging Durham in 1006 and was rewarded by King Æthelred the Unready, whose daughter he married. When Cnut invaded England, Uhtred submitted to him but was murdered in 1016 by Thurbrand the Hold, beginning a long blood feud.
