Ulster Volunteers

1912 · 20th century

The Ulster Volunteers were a Unionist militia founded in 1912 and organised in January 1913 as the Ulster Volunteer Force to resist Home Rule for Ireland. Armed with rifles smuggled from Germany in the Larne gun-running of April 1914, they numbered about 100,000 men, and many later served in the 36th (Ulster) Division in the First World War.
