The University of Naples Federico II was founded by the emperor Frederick II on 5 June 1224 to train lawyers and administrators for his Kingdom of Sicily, so that his subjects need not study at Bologna. It is the oldest state-founded university in the world still in operation. Thomas Aquinas studied there, and it remains one of the largest universities in Italy.
