Villa (estate)
A villa, in the Carolingian context, was a great landed estate belonging to the church, the crown or the aristocracy. Accounts of the Carolingian Empire describe these villae as the primary units of agricultural production and local governance. Royal estates were regulated by the capitulary De Villis, which set out how they were to be managed.
