Santarém
Santarém is a city on the Tagus in central Portugal, the main town of the Ribatejo. As Scallabis, later Scallabis Praesidium Iulium, it was a Roman colony and the seat of one of the three judicial districts (conventus) of Lusitania. Held by the Moors for centuries, it was captured by Afonso Henriques in 1147 and became one of the chief royal towns of medieval Portugal.
