Villmergen Wars

1656, 1712 · 17th century

The Villmergen Wars were two religious civil wars of the Old Swiss Confederacy, both named after battles fought at Villmergen in the Aargau. In the first, in 1656, the Catholic cantons defeated Zürich and Bern; in the second, in 1712, also called the Toggenburg War, the Reformed cantons won. The Peace of Aarau of 1712 ended Catholic predominance in the Confederacy and gave Zürich and Bern control of the most important common lordships.
