Virius Lupus

fl. 197 · 2nd century · Also known as Lucius Virius Lupus

Lucius Virius Lupus was Roman governor of Britain from about 197, appointed by Septimius Severus after the defeat of the usurper Clodius Albinus. With the province's garrison weakened, he bought peace from the Maeatae with large payments, as Cassius Dio reports, and he restored forts in northern England. His successors prepared the ground for Severus' own campaigns in Scotland from 208.
