Stirling
Stirling is a city in central Scotland on the River Forth, at what was long the lowest crossing of the river before its estuary. Its strategic position made Stirling Castle a royal stronghold, and two decisive battles of the Wars of Scottish Independence were fought nearby, at Stirling Bridge in 1297 and Bannockburn in 1314. In Roman times the area was home to the Maeatae.
