b. 1942 · 20th century

Vladimír Mečiar is a Slovak politician who led the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia and was prime minister of Slovakia three times between 1990 and 1998. After winning the 1992 elections in Slovakia, he negotiated the dissolution of Czechoslovakia with Václav Klaus. His later governments were criticised for authoritarian methods, which delayed Slovakia's entry into NATO and the European Union.
