Wartburg Festival

1817 · 19th century · Also known as Wartburgfest

The Wartburg Festival was a gathering of about 500 German students at the Wartburg castle near Eisenach on 18 October 1817, marking the 300th anniversary of Luther's Reformation and the fourth anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig. Students called for national unity and burned books they considered reactionary. Together with later events, it alarmed the German governments and contributed to the Carlsbad Decrees of 1819.
