Werden
Werden is a district of Essen in the Ruhr, Germany, on the river Ruhr. It grew around Werden Abbey, founded around 799 by the Frisian missionary Saint Ludger, whose abbots ruled a small territory as princes of the Empire until 1803. Its Romanesque abbey church, the Basilica of Saint Ludger, survives, and the abbey's library once held the Codex Argenteus. Werden was merged into Essen in 1929.
