White Lotus
The White Lotus was a Chinese religious tradition combining Buddhist and popular beliefs with expectations of the coming of the Maitreya Buddha. Its millenarian teachings inspired repeated rebellions against ruling dynasties. White Lotus ideas fed the Red Turban uprisings that helped bring down the Yuan Dynasty, and the White Lotus Rebellion of 1796–1804 weakened the Qing Empire.
