Xiang Army
The Xiang Army was a regional military force raised in Hunan province by the scholar-official Zeng Guofan to fight the Taiping Rebellion. Its success, together with Li Hongzhang's Huai Army, was crucial in suppressing the Taiping. This reliance on Han Chinese regional armies transferred real military power away from the Manchu court, weakening the dynasty.
