Yaa Asantewaa

c. 1840–1921 · 19th century

Yaa Asantewaa was the Queen Mother of Ejisu in the Ashanti Empire, who led the War of the Golden Stool against British rule in 1900. The uprising was provoked by the British governor's demand to sit on the Golden Stool. After months of resistance she was captured and exiled, and she is remembered as a heroine of anti-colonial resistance in Ghana.
