War of the Golden Stool
The War of the Golden Stool was an Ashanti uprising against British rule in 1900, also known as the Yaa Asantewaa War. It was provoked when the British governor demanded to sit on the Golden Stool, the sacred symbol of Ashanti nationhood. Led by Yaa Asantewaa, it was the last major armed resistance to British rule in West Africa; after its suppression the Ashanti Empire was formally annexed as a British Crown Colony on 1 January 1902, though the Golden Stool itself was never captured.
