Ya'qub (Aq Qoyunlu sultan)

c. 1463–1490 · 15th century · Also known as Sultan Ya'qub

Ya'qub was ruler of the Aq Qoyunlu confederation from 1478 to 1490, a son of Uzun Hasan. From his capital at Tabriz he presided over a brilliant Persianate court that patronised poets and painters, and his forces helped defeat the Safavid leader Shaykh Haydar in 1488. His sudden death in 1490 left the confederation divided among rival princes.
