York River (Virginia)
The York River is a tidal estuary in eastern Virginia, formed by the junction of the Pamunkey and Mattaponi rivers and flowing about 55 kilometres into Chesapeake Bay. Werowocomoco, the seat of the Powhatan paramount chief, stood on its north bank, and Yorktown, where the decisive siege of the American Revolutionary War ended in 1781, lies near its mouth.
