Zell-e Soltan

1850–1918 · 19th century · Also known as Mas'ud Mirza Zell-e Soltan

Zell-e Soltan, born Mas'ud Mirza, was the eldest son of the Qajar ruler Naser al-Din Shah, excluded from the succession because his mother was not of royal birth. As governor of Isfahan from 1874 he ruled much of southern and central Iran, building a strong army and a large fortune. He had the Bakhtiari ilkhan Hossein Qoli Khan executed in 1882, and his wider authority was cut back by his father in 1888.
