Zhongdu

1153–1215 · 12th century

Zhongdu, the Central Capital, was the main capital of the Jurchen Jin dynasty from 1153 to 1215, on the site of south-western Beijing. Enlarged from the earlier Liao city by Wanyan Liang, it had grand palaces and walls. The Mongols under Genghis Khan besieged and took it in 1215, and Kublai Khan later built his capital Khanbaliq to its north-east.
