Zimba

16th century · 16th century

The Zimba were warrior bands from the Zambezi region who appear in Portuguese sources of the late 16th century. They attacked Portuguese posts on the Zambezi and in 1587–1589 marched up the East African coast, sacking Kilwa and reaching Mombasa, before being defeated near Malindi by the Segeju. Historians link them with the Lundu kingdom of the Maravi.
