Zwinger (Dresden)

1710–1728 · 18th century

The Zwinger is a Baroque palace complex in Dresden, built from 1710 to 1728 for Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, by the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser. Designed as a festival arena with galleries and pavilions around a great courtyard, it now houses museums including the Old Masters Picture Gallery. It was rebuilt after its destruction in 1945.
