County of Saldaña
Origins
In the late 9th and early 10th centuries the Leonese kings granted the lands of Saldaña, Carrión and Liébana on the upper Carrión river to Count Diego Muñoz, founder of the family later called the Banu Gómez in Arabic sources. The county was part of the resettlement of the Douro plain.
Rule and society
The counts were among the most powerful nobles of the Kingdom of León, ruling large estates and castles and often rebelling against the crown. Count García Gómez allied with Almanzor and took part in his campaigns in the 990s. The county's towns, Saldaña and Carrión, lay on the route that became the Way of St James.
Decline and legacy
After the decline of the Banu Gómez in the early 11th century, the county passed into the domains of the kings of León and Castile. Carrión later belonged to the Ansúrez family, and its counts appear in the legend of El Cid.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
