Recherla Nayakas

1368 CE – 1475 CE (approx.) · capital Rachakonda

Telugu warrior rulers of Rachakonda and Devarakonda who replaced the Musunuris in Telangana and allied with the Bahmanis.

Origins

The Recherla family were Velama Nayaka commanders who had served the Kakatiya dynasty. In the 1360s, allied with the Bahmani Sultanate, Anapota Nayaka defeated and killed Kapaya Nayaka of the Musunuri Nayaks around 1368 and established rule over Telangana from the hill forts of Rachakonda and Devarakonda.

Rule and society

The Recherlas, also called Padmanayakas, ruled through a network of hill forts and warrior families. Their courts supported Telugu and Sanskrit writing; Sarvajna Singabhupala wrote the Rasarnava Sudhakara, a treatise on poetics. They generally sided with the Bahmanis against the Vijayanagara Empire and the Reddi Kingdom.

Decline and legacy

Over the 15th century the Bahmani Sultanate turned against its former allies and gradually annexed their forts; Rachakonda and Devarakonda were absorbed by about 1475. Velama families later served as zamindars under the Golconda Sultanate and the British.
