Robogdii

100 CE – 200 CE (approx.)

People of the north coast of Ireland recorded by Ptolemy, near a headland he called Robogdium, probably in County Antrim.

Origins

The Robogdii are known only from Ptolemy's Geography of about 150, which places them on the north coast of Ireland. A nearby headland, Robogdium Promontorium, is usually identified with Fair Head or a neighbouring point in north Antrim, facing Kintyre across the North Channel.

Rule and society

Nothing is recorded of their rulers, settlements or customs. Their coast lay only a short sea crossing from Scotland, a route that in later centuries carried the Dál Riata between Antrim and Argyll, and similar close contact across the channel was probably already important in their time.

Decline and legacy

The Robogdii are not mentioned again, and no Irish population name has been securely matched with theirs. North Antrim later formed part of the lands of Dál Riata and the Dal nAraidi.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
