Veliocasses

300 BCE – 57 BCE (approx.) · capital Rotomagus

Belgic people of the lower Seine whose town Rotomagus became Rouen.

Origins

The Veliocasses held the Vexin and the lower Seine valley. Caesar reports that they promised warriors to the Belgic league of 57 BCE together with the Viromandui.

Rule and society

Nothing is known of their rulers. Their position on the Seine gave them a share of river trade to the Channel.

Decline and legacy

They submitted in 57 BCE and later sent men to relieve Alesia. Under Rome their chief town Rotomagus grew into an important river port, the origin of Rouen, later capital of the Duchy of Normandy. Their name survives in the Vexin.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
