Abu Tahir al-Jannabi

906–944 · 10th century

Abu Tahir al-Jannabi was ruler of the Qarmatian state of Bahrain in eastern Arabia from 923 until his death in 944. He led raids on Basra, Kufa and the pilgrim caravans, threatened Baghdad, and in January 930 sacked Mecca during the pilgrimage, killing many pilgrims and carrying off the Black Stone of the Kaaba to al-Ahsa, where it stayed until 951. In 931 he briefly hailed a young Persian as the awaited Mahdi, with disastrous results.
