Advance Australia Fair

1878 · 19th century

Advance Australia Fair is the national anthem of Australia, written by Peter Dodds McCormick and first performed in Sydney in 1878. After being chosen in a national poll in 1977, it was proclaimed the national anthem in 1984, replacing God Save the Queen, which remained the royal anthem. Its words were changed in 2021 from 'young and free' to 'one and free'.
