Al-Mustarshid

1092–1135 · 12th century

Al-Mustarshid was the Abbasid caliph from 1118 to 1135 who tried to free the caliphate from Seljuk control by raising his own army. He was defeated by Sultan Mas'ud near Hamadan in 1135 and taken prisoner. Soon afterwards he was murdered, reportedly by Assassins, though the caliphs later regained control of Iraq.
