Amir (title)
Amir is an Arabic title meaning commander or prince, used for military and political leaders in the Islamic world. Timur, the founder of the Timurid Empire, ruled with the title of amir rather than khan, because he was not a descendant of Genghis Khan. He kept Chinggisid puppet khans as nominal sovereigns while holding real power.
