Amir al-Muslimin

Also known as Commander of the Muslims

Amir al-Muslimin, meaning Commander of the Muslims, was the title adopted by the Almoravid rulers, notably Yusuf ibn Tashfin. It deliberately differed from the caliphal title Commander of the Faithful, acknowledging the religious authority of the Abbasid caliph. The title reflected the Almoravid Empire's legitimacy as defenders of Sunni Islam rather than as a rival caliphate.
