Ashurnasirpal II

r. 883–859 BCE · 9th century BCE

Ashurnasirpal II was King of Assyria from 883 to 859 BCE and one of the founders of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. In yearly campaigns he subdued the Aramaean states along the Euphrates and the Khabur and the highlands of Nairi and Zamua, and reached the Mediterranean, collecting tribute from Patina and the Phoenician cities. His inscriptions boast of brutal punishment of rebels. He rebuilt Kalhu, modern Nimrud, as his capital.
