Astrakhan Khanate

c. 1466–1556 · 15th century

The Astrakhan Khanate was a Tatar state on the lower Volga, centred on the city of Astrakhan, that emerged from the break-up of the Golden Horde in the fifteenth century. It controlled trade routes between Russia, Persia and Central Asia until Ivan IV of Russia conquered it in 1556, bringing the whole course of the Volga under Muscovite rule.
