Atbara River
The Atbara is a river of north-eastern Africa, about 800 kilometres long, which rises in the Ethiopian Highlands near Lake Tana and joins the Nile at the town of Atbara in Sudan, the Nile's last tributary. It floods in summer and shrinks to pools in the dry season. The Battle of Atbara was fought on its banks in 1898 during the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of Sudan.
