Baalis

fl. c. 580 BCE · 6th century BCE

Baalis was a king of Ammon in the early 6th century BCE, after the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem. The Book of Jeremiah says he sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to murder Gedaliah, the governor appointed over Judah by Nebuchadnezzar II. A seal impression naming a servant of 'Baalyasha, king of the Ammonites', found at Tell el-Umeiri, is often linked with him.
