Baasha was king of Israel in the early ninth century BCE, reigning about twenty-four years according to the Books of Kings. An officer from the tribe of Issachar, he killed King Nadab, son of Jeroboam I, during the siege of Gibbethon and wiped out Jeroboam's house. He fought a long border war with Asa of Judah, whose ally Ben-Hadad of Damascus invaded northern Israel, and his son Elah was murdered soon after succeeding him.
