Jeroboam I

10th century BCE · 10th century BCE

Jeroboam I was the first king of the northern Kingdom of Israel, reigning from about 931 to 910 BCE according to the Hebrew Bible. A former overseer of Solomon's forced labour, he fled to Egypt after rebelling and returned to lead the northern tribes in rejecting Solomon's son Rehoboam. He ruled from Shechem and later Tirzah and set up royal sanctuaries with golden calves at Bethel and Dan to rival Jerusalem.
