Bethel

Bethel was an ancient town north of Jerusalem, usually identified with Beitin in the West Bank. The Bible links it with Abraham and Jacob, and after the division of the kingdom Jeroboam I set up a royal shrine there with a golden calf to rival Jerusalem. King Josiah of Judah is said to have destroyed its altar in the late 7th century BCE.
