Bacchylides

5th century BCE · 5th century BCE

Bacchylides was a Greek lyric poet from Ioulis on the island of Keos and the nephew of Simonides. He wrote victory odes, dithyrambs and other choral poems for patrons such as Hieron I of Syracuse. His works were known only from quotations until a papyrus with many of his poems was found in Egypt and published in 1897.
