Bahri Mamluks
The Bahri Mamluks were a regiment of slave soldiers formed by the Ayyubid sultan al-Salih Ayyub and stationed on an island in the Nile, from whose name ('bahr', river) they took their title. They overthrew the Ayyubids in Egypt in 1250 and defeated the Mongols at Ain Jalut in 1260. Their leaders, including Baybars, ruled the Mamluk Sultanate until 1382.
