Barchuq Art Tegin

13th century · 13th century

Barchuq Art Tegin was the idiqut, or ruler, of the Uyghur Kingdom of Qocho in the Turfan region. In 1209 he threw off the overlordship of the Qara Khitai, killing their resident official, and submitted voluntarily to Genghis Khan. Genghis honoured him as a 'fifth son' and promised him a daughter in marriage, and Uyghur troops and scribes went on to serve the Mongol Empire.
