Basorun Gaa crisis

c. 1745–1774 · 18th century

The Basorun Gaa crisis was the period of c. 1745–1774 when the Basorun Gaa, head of the Oyo Mesi council, dominated the Oyo Empire and several Alaafins were compelled to die. It revealed the dangerous imbalance between royal and council power in Oyo. It ended when Alaafin Abiodun overthrew and executed Gaa, but the instability foreshadowed Oyo's decline.
