Battle of Halmyros

1311 · 14th century · Also known as Battle of the Cephissus

The Battle of Halmyros was fought on 15 March 1311, probably near the Cephissus in Boeotia, between the Catalan Company and the army of Walter V of Brienne, Duke of Athens. The Catalans flooded the marshy ground in front of their lines, trapping the Frankish heavy cavalry, and killed Walter and most of his knights. The victors then seized the Duchy of Athens, which they held for more than seventy years.
