Catalan Company

1302–1388 · 14th century · Also known as Grand Catalan Company, Almogavars

The Catalan Company was a band of mercenaries, mostly Catalan and Aragonese almogavars, led first by Roger de Flor and hired by the Byzantine Empire in 1303 against the Turks. After quarrelling with Byzantium it ravaged Thrace and Macedonia, then defeated and killed Duke Walter of Brienne at Halmyros in 1311 and ruled the Duchy of Athens until 1388.
