Duchy of Neopatras

1319 CE – 1390 CE (approx.) · capital Neopatras

Catalan duchy in southern Thessaly, created on the ruins of the Greek Principality of Thessaly and ruled with Athens by the kings of Sicily and Aragon.

Origins

After the Catalan Company conquered the Duchy of Athens in 1311, it pushed north into Thessaly. When John II Doukas of the Principality of Thessaly died without heirs in 1318, the Catalans occupied the south of the region with its capital Neopatras (modern Ypati) and organised it as a duchy in 1319.

Rule and society

Neopatras was held together with Athens by the Aragonese kings of Sicily, who appointed vicars-general such as Alfonso Fadrique to govern it. A small Catalan military class ruled over Greeks and Vlachs, following the customs of Barcelona. In 1379-1380 the duchies passed to Peter IV of Aragon, who called the Acropolis the most beautiful jewel in the world.

Decline and legacy

Attacks by the Navarrese Company, the Florentine Nerio Acciaioli and the Ottomans broke the Catalan hold. Neopatras fell around 1390, and the Ottomans took Thessaly in the 1390s.
