Battle of Hingston Down
The Battle of Hingston Down was fought in 838 at Hingston Down in east Cornwall, near the River Tamar, where Ecgberht of Wessex defeated a combined army of Cornish Britons and Danish Vikings. Recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, it is the last recorded battle between the Cornish and the West Saxons and is seen as the end of effective Cornish independence.
