Battle of Imphal

1944 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

The Battle of Imphal was fought from March to July 1944 around the town of Imphal in north-eastern India, when the Japanese Fifteenth Army attempted to invade India from Burma. Supplied by air, British and Indian forces under William Slim held the Imphal plain, and the Japanese, short of food and supplies, withdrew with heavy losses. Together with Kohima, it was the turning point of the Burma campaign.
