Battle of Tegyra

375 BCE · 4th century BCE

The Battle of Tegyra was fought in 375 BCE near Orchomenus in Boeotia, when the Theban commander Pelopidas, leading the Sacred Band and a small force of cavalry, met a larger Spartan force. The Thebans broke the Spartans and killed both their commanders. It was the first time Spartans had been beaten in open battle by a smaller force, and it foreshadowed the Theban victory at Leuctra.
