Battle of Viervoet

1851 · 19th century

The Battle of Viervoet was fought on 30 June 1851 near the Lesotho border between a force led by the British Resident Henry Warden and the Basotho of Moshoeshoe I. Warden's British troops, Boer burghers and African allies were defeated. The defeat undermined British authority in the Orange River Sovereignty and contributed to Britain's withdrawal in 1854.
