Battle of Vienna (1683)

1683 · 17th century · Also known as failed Vienna siege of 1683 · Part of the Great Turkish War

The Battle of Vienna was fought in 1683, when a relief army led by King John III Sobieski of Poland broke the Ottoman siege of the Habsburg capital. The failed siege ended the westward advance of the Ottoman Empire into Central Europe. It was followed by a long war in which the Ottomans lost Hungary, and is often treated as the start of Ottoman decline.
