Black Ruthenia

Black Ruthenia is a historical region in the upper Neman basin of present-day western Belarus, around Navahrudak, Hrodna and Slonim. Brought under Lithuanian rule by Mindaugas in the mid-13th century, it was one of the first Ruthenian lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and Navahrudak became an early centre of Lithuanian power. The origin of its name is uncertain.
